Webinar description
Premenstrual disorders, including PMDD, can have profound effects on daily life. What can large population studies tell us about their risk factors and their links to health beyond the menstrual cycle? This webinar will explore evidence on psychiatric comorbidity, suicidal behavior, physical health outcomes, and mental health during subsequent reproductive transitions. It will also introduce emerging genetic and biomarker research and discuss what these findings can—and cannot yet—tell us about clinical assessment, prevention, and future care.
Learning objectives
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
Describe key risk factors for premenstrual disorders and the role of sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations.
Summarize population-based evidence linking premenstrual disorders to psychiatric comorbidity, suicidal behavior, and long-term physical health outcomes.
Explain how a history of premenstrual disorders may inform assessment of mental health vulnerability during pregnancy, postpartum, and the menopausal transition.
Distinguish epidemiological associations from causal evidence and discuss the potential and current limitations of emerging genetic and biomarker findings.
Professional bio
Donghao Lu, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, where he leads the Women’s Mental Health Epidemiology research group. Trained in obstetrics and gynecology and epidemiology, he studies women’s mental health across the reproductive life course, with a particular focus on premenstrual disorders, perinatal depression, and sensitivity to hormonal changes. His research combines large population cohorts, linked health registers, and molecular data to investigate risk factors, long-term health outcomes, and opportunities for prevention. He also leads the HER MIND, women’s mental health research network at Karolinska Institutet, and serves the Steering Group at WHOLE Center, women’s health research center jointly hosted between Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet. The evidence base is still growing, but it's enough to help patients make informed decisions today.
Intended audience: Mental health practitioners, medical providers, and researchers working in reproductive mental health and allied fields. People with lived experience of PMDD.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Attendance qualifies for 1 CPD credit. Participants who require official documentation for their records or licensing body may obtain a certificate for a $10 fee.
