Most therapists and mental health practitioners encounter clients with PMDD or PME without having received any specific training. A 2026 paper in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology highlights this gap and calls for evidence-based guidance for clinicians. Many individuals still spend years seeking answers while clinicians lack the framework to recognise, assess, or treat premenstrual disorders effectively.

This session explores evidence-based psychological approaches and their application to the clinical features of premenstrual disorders, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), and mindfulness-based approaches. The session considers what each brings to presentations involving cyclical symptom patterns, shame and self-blame, emotional dysregulation in the luteal phase, identity disruption, and relational impact.

The session then introduces the CYCLES Menstrual and Hormone-Informed Practitioner Framework, developed by Dr Helena Tucker through research with 252 people with lived experience of PMDD and drawing on multidisciplinary input from psychology, medicine, and nutrition. CYCLES structures these approaches into a coherent clinical framework for working with premenstrual disorders, grounded in ongoing clinical practice and preliminary feasibility data.

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to apply evidence-based psychological approaches to PMDD and PME, and an introduction to the CYCLES framework. Details of the CYCLES Practitioner Certification, launching in October 2026, will also be shared.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:1. Recognise the core clinical features of PMDD and PME, including cyclical symptom patterns, luteal emotional dysregulation, shame and self-blame, identity disruption, and relational impact.2. Describe what evidence-based psychological approaches (CBT, DBT, ACT, CFT and mindfulness-based approaches) each offer for these clinical features.3. Outline the CYCLES Menstrual and Hormone-Informed Practitioner Framework and how it structures these approaches into a coherent, cycle-informed approach to working with premenstrual disorders.

Intended audience: Therapists, psychologists, counsellors, and other mental health and medical professionals working with premenstrual disorders.
